Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dunnage bag?

A dunnage bag, also known as a dunnage airbag or simply an airbag, is an inflatable bag made of a polyethylene inner liner and an outer shell of kraft paper or woven polypropylene.

Why use a dunnage bag?

Dunnage bags stabilize and protect cargo during transportation, commonly in shipping containers, trucks, or railway wagons.

How to use a dunnage bag?

Place an empty dunnage bag between the cargo and inflate it with air until it securely presses the cargo against the inside walls of the transport vehicle.

Are kraft paper dunnage bags better than pp woven dunnage bags or vice versa?

Neither kraft paper nor PP woven dunnage bags are inherently better. Both types can meet the required bursting pressures when correctly manufactured.

For example, dunnage bags used in container transport should be inflated to a maximum of 20 kPa (0.2 bar / 2.9 PSI) and withstand up to three times this base value, or 60 kPa (0.6 bar / 8.7 PSI).

Which dunnage bag should I use?

The right dunnage bag depends on factors such as the space between cargo, cargo height, stability, and the intended placement of the bag.

We’re here to assist you in making the right choice.

When should I use a Level 1 / 20 kPa dunnage bag?

A 20 kPa dunnage bag is ideal for securing cargo transported via truck or sea containers.

When should I use a Level 2 / 40 kPa dunnage bag?

A 40 kPa dunnage bag is best suited for securing cargo transported in a ship’s hold.

Are there global standards for dunnage bags?

No, there are no universal standards for dunnage bags. It’s always a good idea to consult with an expert to determine the appropriate type for your needs.

What is an AAR certificate?

An AAR certificate is issued upon successfully passing the audit process of the American Association of Railroads (AAR).

Does a dunnage bag need to be AAR certified?

Dunnage bags are not required to have AAR certification.

Do Safetrans dunnage bags meet AAR standards?

Yes, Safetrans dunnage bags adhere to the standards set by the American Association of Railroads (AAR).

However, we do not hold an AAR certificate because it is only occasionally requested in the United States, where railway wagons are loaded domestically. In all other regions, AAR certification is not relevant.
